From Forklifts to Mining Trucks: The Hidden World of Off-Highway Forgings

When most people think about precision forgings, they think about cars. But some of the toughest forging applications never see a public road. Forklift masts, mining-machinery brackets, hydraulic tooling bodies, material-handling linkages — these off-highway parts work in environments where a forged failure means a multi-thousand-dollar line stoppage, not just a warranty claim.
After 28 years of shipping off-highway forgings to forklift OEMs, mining-equipment makers and hydraulic-tool customers — including programs for Toyota and Crown lift-truck platforms — we thought it was worth writing down what makes off-highway forging a different discipline from automotive forging.

Why Off-Highway Parts Are Different

An automotive chassis part might see 200,000 km of service. A forklift mast bearing block can go through 10 loading-unloading cycles an hour, 12 hours a day, 6 days a week — for 15 years. A mining-machinery bracket sees dust, mud, rock debris and constant vibration in environments where a 50-ton excavator swings 8 hours a day.
The engineering requirements shift accordingly:
Higher impact loads. A forklift dropping a 3-ton load onto its forks transmits a shock load through the mast, the carriage and every linkage pin. Static tensile strength is not enough; the forging must absorb repeated shock cycles.
Wear resistance. Off-highway pivots, pins and bushings operate in abrasive environments. The forging's surface must respond predictably to induction hardening or carburizing.
Corrosion tolerance. Outdoor equipment sees rain, road salt (in Nordic ports), and hydraulic-fluid leaks. The material and heat treatment must hold up.
Larger part sizes. Off-highway structural forgings routinely run 10–80 kg, where automotive parts tend to cluster under 10 kg.

The Forklift Forging Family

A typical counterbalance forklift uses dozens of forgings. The part families we produce for Toyota and Crown lift-truck programs include:
Mast and carriage components — inner/outer mast brackets, chain anchors, carriage rollers
Lift-linkage and tilt-cylinder mounts — pivot brackets, cylinder clevises
Axle and steering knuckles for the lift truck's own chassis
Counterweight mounting brackets
Fork heel and fork arm forgings
These parts look unremarkable on a drawing. A bracket is a bracket. But when a 3-ton truck is lifting a loaded container stack in a rain-heavy port, that bracket is holding up both the load and the truck driver's safety. The OEM qualification bar is as high as any automotive program.
Figure 1. Electric screw press lines. Off-highway forgings tend to be heavier and more robust than automotive parts — our 300T–4000T range covers the full spectrum.

Why We Run 300T–4000T Across 11 Lines

Off-highway forging demands a wide tonnage range, and that is exactly what our plant is built around:
Small off-highway components (0.015–1 kg): pins, small brackets, linkage pieces — run on our smaller presses at high stroke rates
Medium structural parts (1–10 kg): mast brackets, cylinder clevises, knuckles — run on mid-range 630T–1,600T presses
Large off-highway forgings (10–80 kg): mining brackets, heavy-duty axle components, large lever arms — run on our 2,500T–4,000T lines
Light-alloy parts (up to ~100 kg): aluminum and copper forgings for hydraulic and electrical applications
The reason this matters for off-highway customers is simple: you do not want to split a single program across three forging shops. One plant, one quality system, one engineering team, one escalation path — whether your part weighs 50 grams or 50 kilograms.

Quality for Off-Highway: The Standard Is the Same

Off-highway equipment buyers sometimes assume that because the part is not on a passenger car, the quality bar is lower. It is not. Our off-highway programs run to the same IATF 16949 / ISO 9001 discipline as our automotive business:
In-house CMM, spectrometer, tensile tester and metallographic lab
First-article and lot-release documentation on every shipment
PPM tracking and corrective-action closeout
Magnetic-particle or ultrasonic inspection on critical load-path parts
The difference is the customer's expectation of service life. A passenger car runs 15 years. A forklift in a busy port runs 20 years. A mining excavator runs 25 years. The forging has to last the whole time.

What This Means for Your Next RFQ

If you are sourcing forgings for forklifts, material-handling, mining machinery or hydraulic tooling, three questions separate a real off-highway forging partner from a generalist shop:
Do you have experience with off-highway load cases? Automotive experience helps, but off-highway parts see shock loads and wear cycles that passenger cars do not. Ask for reference applications.
Can you handle the weight range? If your parts span 50 grams to 50 kilograms, you want one supplier that covers both ends — not two suppliers arguing over who owns the interface.
Is your quality system built for 20-year service life? Ask for the heat-treat and inspection documentation, not just the certificate.

Liju's Off-Highway Track Record

For 28 years, our off-highway portfolio has included:
Forklift mast and carriage forgings for Toyota and Crown lift-truck platforms
Mining-machinery brackets and structural components
Hydraulic tooling bodies and forged fittings
Rail and commercial-vehicle brake forgings (Knorr-Bremse programs)
Material-handling linkage and pivot components
We run 11 electric screw press lines from 300T to 4,000T, integrated with 15 CNC machining centers, all under one roof in Nanjing. Roughly 70% of our output ships to customers in Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Finland, the USA and Canada — with finished-part inventory stocked in Germany and the USA for short-notice replenishment.
Send us your off-highway drawings. Our engineering team returns a written DFM review within 48 hours — feasibility, recommended process, tooling lead time and indicative pricing.
